It is with great sadness that the Collie Association has learned of the passing of our former Secretary and President, Aileen Speding (Antoc). Aileen joined the Collie Association Committee in 1961 and became Secretary in 1969, a position she held for 23 years until 1992. She later became President of the Association in 2000, in recognition of her many years of dedication and service. The Collie Association meant a great deal to Aileen, and she devoted countless hours to its success over many years. Her daughter, Carole, later followed in her footsteps by taking on the role of Secretary, continuing the family's long association with the club. Away from the Association, Aileen was one of the best-known and most respected names in the dog world. The Antoc kennel was established and registered with the Kennel Club in 1953 and went on to become synonymous with quality. Together, Aileen and Carole bred an incredible 25 Champions across Rough Collies, Smooth Collies, Shetland Sheepdogs and Cardigan Welsh Corgis, winning 157 Challenge Certificates along with many Reserve Challenge Certificates. In the late 1970s, Aileen gave Carole a separate interest in the Antoc kennel name, allowing her to continue breeding Collies and carry the Antoc name forward. Aileen's love of dogs began in the early 1950s, and one of her first major winners was the Shetland Sheepdog, Ch Hallinwood Golden Fetter. From those early days, she built a lifetime of success as a breeder, exhibitor and judge, but she was never someone who kept her knowledge to herself. Many people taking their first steps into the show world will remember Aileen for the help and encouragement she gave so freely. She was always willing to share her experience, offer advice and point people in the right direction. She had time for everyone, and many exhibitors owe their confidence to the support she gave them over the years. For many years, Brook Cottage in Dorset was at the heart of the Antoc kennel, and it remains home to Carole and her husband, Jim. It was a place that welcomed many friends from the dog world and holds so many happy memories. Aileen's passing is a great loss, not only to the Collie Association but to the wider dog show community. She will be remembered with great affection and respect for everything she gave to our Association, to our breeds and to the many people whose lives she touched. Our sincere condolences go to Carole, Jim and all of Aileen's family and friends at this very sad time. Aileen's legacy will live on through the dogs she bred, the people she encouraged and inspired, and the lasting contribution she made to the Collie Association and the world of pedigree dogs.
